It's no surprise, then, that the one draw that keeps viewers coming back episode after episode, season after season, is undoubtedly the well written and fleshed out characters. It is as close to an animated stage play as one can imagine. More impressive than its length, however, is the series' ability to captivate viewers with nothing more than minimalistic backdrops and long, uninterrupted dialogue sequences where characters trade endless puns back and forth with their sharp tongues. The multi-season epic was first released in July of 2009 by Studio SHAFT, an adaptation of the now 24+ novel epic from the pen of Nisio Isin. The Monogatari Series is an anime juggernaut.
